Alpha Course - Carbrook Parents

Commencing: Thursday 23 July

What is Alpha?

Alpha is a series of interactive sessions that explore life, faith and meaning. It is a chance to share thoughts and ideas on each session's topic and discuss them in a small group. There’s no obligation to say anything, and there’s nothing you can’t say (seriously). It’s an opportunity to hear from others and contribute your own perspective in an honest, friendly, and open environment.

Parents and  the wider college community are warmly invited to participate.

Mr Josh Wilson - Deputy Principal MSS

Dear Parents and Guardians,

MSS report cards will be released at the start of the holiday break (22nd June), available on Parent Lounge and through the Calvary App. Mid-year report cards provide an important moment-in-time snapshot of how students are going in class and ideally should be used for reflection and celebration, before starting Semester 2.

Parent Teacher Student Interviews will also go live at the same time as report cards and will be available for booking on the App. Interviews will be held on the 22nd of July (Term 3, Week 2, Wednesday) and will remain open for booking until the 19th of July.

I thought it may be worth sharing some ways to use the report card with your child to prompt useful reflection.

How can I use the report card effectively?

Here is a suggested stratagem for having a positive forward-focussed talk on the report card with your child where they take ownership and responsibility for their learning:

  1. Parent/s read the report card without your child present (and process your thoughts and feelings first).
  2. Organise a time with your child to sit down in an open and friendly space and show them their report card. Give your child their report card to read and put on your best poker face (stay quiet).
  3. Prompt them to offer their views of the report card first.
    1. Don’t be afraid of a little silence and make use of a repeated phrase like ‘anything else?’.
  4. Here are some guiding questions you could use if needed:
    1. So, what are some thoughts you have about your report card?
    2. What subjects did you put most of your effort into?
    3. What subjects might improve if you put more effort into them?
    4. Is there anything that surprises you about your results? Why?
    5. Would you like to see anything different on the next report card?
  5. Avoid the ‘you are...’ statements:
    1. You are smart
    2. You are lazy
  6. Use statements that focus on effort:
    1. I was happy/pleased to see how hard you worked at Maths…
    2. I did notice that you didn’t put much effort into your homework...
  7. The ‘where to next’ question:
    1. You mentioned you could improve at Maths – what habits would you need to develop to do that?
      1. You don’t want to land with the standard ‘work harder’ answer because this is like a new year’s resolution that doesn’t really happen. Ideally you want to prompt some concrete responses like – 15 minutes of study on X each day, or I will show a draft to my teacher 2 weeks before the assignment, etc.
    2. I (parent), can help you with developing that habit by ….

Remember the golden formula, IMPROVEMENT = effort + feedback x time.

Finally, don’t be so improvement focused that you forget to celebrate the positive in a report card, whether that is a small incremental improvement or an impressive accomplishment in a particular subject.

If your child has poor study habits and is dismissive or uninterested in changing this, that then falls into your parenting space to make some decisions that suit your context. Every family situation is different, however in my family context, one thing I have found works well is regulating screen time – when you have done X amount of Y you can have screen time.

Should I book a Parent Teacher Student Interview?

You are always welcome to book an interview at any time. You should consider booking an interview if the teacher has specifically requested one or if you are concerned about your child’s progress in class. If there is a significant mismatch between how your child thinks they progressing/behaving in class and what the report card indicates, it would also be worth booking an interview. If you go interviews, please take your child along.

  • Hair must be off the ears, off the eyebrows (1cm above), and off the collar.
  • No false eye-lashes are permitted.
  • No false nails are permitted
  • No coloured nail polish is permitted

Screen-Free Family Fun for the Winter Break

Mrs Sweasey, from the Library and English Department would like to share some ideas with parents for helping students enjoy part of their winter holidays away from screens.

To begin the holidays, students have been encouraged to visit the school library in Week 9 to borrow books for holiday reading. A good book is a simple and meaningful way to slow down, rest and enjoy quiet time at home.

Families staying close to home may like to visit some local venues to make memories and spend quality time together. The State Library of Queensland offers free family activities at South Bank and online, including creative workshops, children’s programs and tours. Families may also enjoy visiting the Queensland Museum, Queensland Rail Workshops in Ipswich, Cobb & Co Museum in Toowoomba, or joining local library holiday programs.

For families who enjoy the outdoors, consider a picnic, nature walk or day trip to places such as Karawatha Forest Discovery Centre, South Bank Parklands, Roma Street Parkland, Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mt Coot-tha, New Farm Park, Kangaroo Point Cliffs, or a riverside walk followed by a CityCat ride.

Year 9 Service Trip Donations

Each year, our Year 9 students travel to Chinchilla and Tara Shire for their Service Trip in September. As part of this initiative, we are collecting donations of shoes, warm blankets, and winter clothing for students at Tara Shire State College, where many families would benefit from additional support.

In the Middle and Senior School, these donations will replace the usual gold coin contribution for Free Dress at the end of the term; students can bring their items to Form class throughout the term, where their donation will be recorded and permission for Free Dress granted.
