Making Calvary History: Year 9 & 10 Girls Shine at AVSC
01 May 2025

For the first time ever, Calvary Christian College competed in the Australian Volleyball Schools Cup (AVSC) — the nation’s largest school-based sporting event, held each December after the school year wraps up. It’s not a tournament we’ve previously entered, simply because it falls outside the regular school calendar. Competing meant sacrificing a week of holidays, committing to training through Term 4, and relying on the support of dedicated parents and staff to make it possible.
But in 2023, our Year 9 and 10 girls combined as a team and stepped up — and what a debut it was.
Over seven tough days on the Gold Coast, the team battled it out against schools from across Australia, finishing an incredible 5th out of 17 teams in their division. For a group that had never played together before — a mix of Year 9 and Year 10 students — the way they gelled as a team and grew stronger with every match was something truly special to witness.
Chris Paech, Head of Sport, summed it up perfectly:
“I was really proud of all of the girls who made that commitment from the start and were unwavering throughout Term 4 and during the event. To watch them train in the early days and then to see them play during AVSC was incredible. Myself and the school are proud of their efforts — well done!”
Led by student coach Payton (Year 12) and captain Joan (Year 10), this team brought energy, encouragement, and unity to every game. From the sidelines to the scoreboard, they gave it everything.
Team members:
Year 9 – Sophie, Alexis, Eden, Tiana, Celine
Year 10 – Almae, Tiani, Kaela
We couldn’t be prouder of what these girls achieved — not just for their results, but for their heart, commitment, and how they carried the Calvary spirit through every serve, set, and spike.
Congratulations, girls — history made, and a high bar set.
