It is Leadership Inductions this week across our campuses - a special Term 1 event as we honour and celebrate our student leaders. At Calvary Christian College, we understand that developing leadership skills is a vital part of preparing students for life beyond the classroom. Leadership is more than titles and positions; it’s about influence, service, and making a positive impact. From the early years of Junior School through to the Middle Senior School, our leadership program is designed to nurture confident, empathetic leaders who are equipped to make a difference in their school and wider community.
Our leadership journey is intentional and inclusive, providing students with opportunities to develop character, resilience, and a heart for service. Both Kim Winton, Deputy Principal of Junior School, and Josh Wilson, Deputy Principal of Middle and Senior School, are passionate about fostering this culture of leadership.
Leadership in Junior School: Building Character and Confidence
“At Calvary Christian College, we believe that leadership is not only about taking charge but also about making a positive impact,” says Kim Winton. “Leadership takes courage, and it’s through leadership that character is shaped. We are committed to nurturing leadership skills in our students from an early age, empowering them to be bold, influential, and articulate communicators.”
In Junior School, leadership is built on service and collaboration. Students are given numerous opportunities to step up and take initiative, from participating in the Happy Hens Café and Playground Pals program to leading Chapel services and clubs, and buddying with younger students. These experiences not only develop organisational skills but also instil a deep sense of responsibility and mission.
“True leadership is built upon a heart for service and a desire to make a difference,” Kim explains. “Our students are mentored by both staff and peers, ensuring they grow not only as capable leaders but also as ambassadors for Calvary and for Christ.”
Leadership in Middle and Senior School: Influence in Action
As students move through to Middle Senior School, the approach to leadership is about empowering every student to lead through action and initiative. “At Calvary, every student has the opportunity to demonstrate leadership, but that doesn’t mean every student becomes a leader with a title or badge,” says Josh Wilson. “We see leadership as influence in action. Students who bring about good for others or enrich the lives of their peers are recognised as leaders.”
Leadership in practice takes many forms - mentoring younger students, running cocurricular activities, organising events, and leading service initiatives that improve school life. “Our goal is for students to identify a need and proactively provide a solution that benefits the community,” Josh explains. “Leadership at Calvary sits within our whole school expectations: to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly. This requires effort, sacrifice, and a willingness to consider the needs of others.”
What makes Calvary’s leadership model unique is its focus on fairness and inclusion. Leadership is not about a popularity contest - it’s about students stepping up and engaging with the needs around them. "Young people have an incredible capacity to dream big for their community, and it’s an honour to walk alongside them in that journey.”
A Foundation for Life
At Calvary, it’s about equipping students with the confidence, skills, and faith they need to lead with purpose throughout their lives. By encouraging students to reflect on how their actions align with their values, Calvary helps them to grow into leaders who will positively influence their communities, both now and in the future.
