For the first time in Calvary Christian College history, one of our volleyball teams is stepping onto the national stage at the Australian Volleyball Schools Cup (AVSC).

This prestigious event, which has seen a record 524 team entries this year, offers an opportunity to showcase some of the depth of talent at Calvary. Over seven action-packed days (during the school holidays), our students will take on many other schools from across the country which in itself will be an amazing experience.

Chris Paech, our Head of Sport, shares, “Participating in the AVSC is an exciting opportunity for Calvary to show the greater community the talent we have here. It’s a big step up from the regular Volleyball Queensland tournaments where we’ve consistently competed. The commitment from the girls, coaches, and everyone involved has been incredible, especially with the dedication required over the holiday period.”

Calvary will be represented in the Year 10 Division 2 category, with a team composed of students from Years 9 and 10. Despite this being their first time playing together, the girls have been training intensely, working on their combinations and teamwork. “We have a few friendlies lined up over the next month to help the team prepare,” adds Chris. “It’s all coming together nicely, and we’re very excited.”

A Student-Led Initiative

Calvary Volleyball Captain and student coach, Payton Clothier was the initial driving force behind this opportunity. “When I first heard about the AVSC, I wondered why we’d never participated before. Before I was even captain, I hoped to make this dream a reality for our team this year,” says Payton. “With the support of our Principal, Cherylynne Gostelow,  Josh Wilson and Chris Paech, we were able to assemble a competitive team. Training is going well, and we’re only a month away from the tournament!”

The team also has the support of Phil Winton, a dedicated school parent who has been integral in coordinating efforts on the ground. His support alongside the coaching team and administration has been appreciated in bringing this experience to life for our athletes.

The excitement and preparation for the AVSC mark a special moment for Calvary Christian College’s sports program. We look forward to watching our team compete, learn, and grow through this extraordinary experience.
