Dear Parents and Carers,

It is hard to believe we are half way through Term 3. It has been a wonderful week at the College. Our Chaplaincy team, alongside our wonderful Stage 3 leaders have led the Junior School in celebrating Good News in our personal lives and wider community. There is so much to be grateful for. Research shows that expressing gratitude reduces stress, increases optimism, and increases dopamine in the brain. This week has been powerful as we focus on Good News and express gratitude for the good things in our lives.

Safe on Social Presentation

Digital Technologies have profoundly changed childhood. The internet and the means to access it, such as iPads, smart phones, messaging apps along with social media platforms have become a daily part of young people’s lives. They are transforming learning, the way friendships are built and maintained and how children spend some of their leisure time and their engagement with wider society.

Yesterday our students in Stage 2 and 3 engaged in a presentation called Safe on Socials. This is a vitally important topic as our students are growing up in a digital society. Navigating cyber safety and social media is an important skill to develop in our students.

Some key areas that were covered are below.  I encourage you to speak to your child about their key takeaways from the presentation.

  • Online safety and using social media with awareness
  • Online stranger danger and what grooming might look like and what to do
  • Group Chats and strategies to manage them better
  • Posting and sharing photos and the law
  • Respectful online relationships and consent
  • Cyber-bullying, online harassment, and how to report it
  • Online gaming safety
  • Strategies to build resilience

I have also attached 2 helpful attachments and a link to the website that contains free resources for parents and carers to help us navigate this world for our children.

Evening with the Principal

Tonight at 6pm we are hosting an Evening with the Principal. Parents, this is an excellent opportunity to hear about future plans and vision for Calvary from our Principal and CEO, Mrs Cherylynne Gostelow. Please book by using the link here.

Bush Dance

Tomorrow evening the College is hosting a bush dance from 6:30pm – 8:00pm. Proceeds of this event will be going towards our Year 9 service trip to Chinchilla and more specifically Drought Angels. We are very fortunate to have the very experienced and enthusiastic Beefa's Bush Band performing and hosting this event for us. Please note that there will be food and drinks on sale and a photo booth on the night to take some memorable pictures of friends and family.

Drop Off and Pick Up

Please be reminded that all Junior School Students are to be dropped off and picked up at the Western Carpark. We are noticing that some students are being dropped off at the Kingdom Kids car park and the side gates. Unless you have a child also in Kingdom Kids we ask that you do not use this car park.

Quick Pick Up

The quick pick-up is for parents to drive through and collect their child. The intention is for your child to hop in the car independently. Of course, for the little ones, you may need to get out to quickly do up their seat belt. Please be as quick as possible to keep the flow of traffic moving.

The other alternative is parking and coming to the Western Hanger to collect your child. Please use the pedestrian crossings on either side of the carpark.

Prep and Stage 1 Athletics Active Morning

We would love to see parents, grandparents and friends on Wednesday 16 August from 9.00am-10.30am. Students look forward to showcasing some of their athletic skills learned during PE lessons.

It is always a lot of fun, with Mrs O'Donnell and our Year 6 students running age-appropriate activities.

Thank you for partnering with us on your child's learning journey. It is a pleasure to see them grown and learn each and every day!

JAG NOTICE

Due to our Ag staff and Show Team being at Ekka, there will be no JAG next week. We will be at the Ekka from Tuesday 15 August until Sunday 20 August and can been found on Level 2 of the Large Animal Pavilion, if you would like to see the team in action.

Also, don't forget to look out for Calvary's scarecrows, mini farms and Ekkapillars if you are walking through the Agricultural Hall.

Olympics Unleashed Visit

We are so excited to have Taylor McKeown connecting with our Stage 2 and 3 students tomorrow, as part of the Olympics Unleashed Program. Taylor won the silver medal in the 200m breaststroke in Rio 2016.

The students will learn from Taylor’s Olympic journey how to build resilience, the importance of setting goals and how to find what you are passionate about.

Students will hear firsthand from Taylor about how she overcame challenges to compete in her chosen sport at the very highest level, and how some lessons she’s learnt in sport can help students to be the best they can be – whether that’s in school, at home, on the sporting field or with friends.
