Dear Parents and Carers

Potholes and Pestilence

As expected with increased people movement and mixing over the school holidays, the incidence of COVID-19 on our campuses is once again interrupting our lives. At this point, adults on our campuses and senior students are encouraged to use masks as suits their personal circumstances. In an effort to minimise teacher absence, staff have been asked to wear masks as much as possible on campus. We are all encouraged to keep responsible social distancing where we can and manage the ventilation of indoor spaces. The cold weather discourages open doors and windows, but staff and students are encouraged to be outdoors and open classroom doors as much as possible, as well as maintaining good personal hygiene practices. If you are sick, please stay at home. Requirements for wearing a face mask for 7 days after having COVID-19, or when a close contact, remain in place.

The ongoing rain has impacted our already less than wonderful bitumen at the Carbrook campus and as fast as we spot repair potholes, they reappear – only bigger! Thank you for your patience with this. We are working on a more permanent, albeit costly, solution. It would be wonderful to resurface the carparks and entrance to the campus, while widening the access to allow for an improved quick pick-up experience.

With the oval at Carbrook recovering from the flood event and even more rain predicted next week, the water table is still so high that we have had to make the decision to cancel the Athletics Carnival events for 2022. These were postponed from term 2 and will now be replaced by Active Afternoon, an event for MSS and one for JS students to be held at Carbrook. Look out for details in the Thursday communications from Heads of School.

Students benefit when their parents are engaged in active partnership with their educators. There are a number of things I would like to share with you through the Monday Principal’s communication over the next few weeks where your active agency can help your child experience the best of Calvary. These will be discussed at our Evening with the Principal on Tuesday 16th August on the Carbrook campus at 7pm. You can book here. I invite you to bring your ideas to that meeting as we begin to work together in new ways following the decision in March to dissolve the P&F constitution.

Changes were made to our bus service at the start of 2022. I would love to hear from parents about how to ensure this service is both cost effective and responsibly resourced. Staff spend a lot of time following up when students either don’t use their student cards to board or their cards have no funds. The costs incurred in staff following this up are a concern to me. I am keen to improve this and provide a ‘worry free’ service where the software works well as it’s used well. Please top up your child’s card before use and encourage your child to use the card.

Kim Winton, Head of Junior school at Springwood is establishing a working group to consider the school uniform. It has been the desire of my heart for some time to simplify the uniform in order to provide our children with an update, a more practical uniform that reflects the contemporary world of work they anticipate and, importantly, limits excessive cost to parents. Any changes accepted will be phased in SLOWLY so that any uniform item you currently own can be worn, passed down and eventually worn out before being discarded.

I look forward to seeing many of you at our Evening with the Principal. These evenings will be held each semester alternating between Springwood and Carbrook. I hope you can join me as we shape the future of Calvary.

Yours sincerely,

Mrs Cherylynne Gostelow
